Choosing and Setting Up Your Lesson Plan

Choose A Theme:
Choosing a theme for your weekly lesson plan can be based on the time of the year, or the season, as well as special events.  Plan ahead and prepare your preschool lesson plan a month in advance. (e.g., prepare Valentine Thematic Unit in January. ) It will give you plenty of time to gather resources and prepare it. You can always make last minute changes if needed.

Introduce the Theme:
Use a song , a story or hands-on activity to grab their interest and attention. Discuss what this theme is about.

Integrate it across all subjects:
The theme can be integrated across many subjects. Children will learn about the theme through from different angles.

  • Language Arts: Read books, create vocabulary word activities, and encourage storytelling related to the theme.
  • Math: Count objects and measure theme-related items.
  • Art & Crafts: Create theme-inspired craft projects,  collage and painting activities .
  • Music: Sing songs related to the theme.
  • Physical Education: Incorporate games and movement activities tied to the theme.

Hands-On Activities:
Create
hands-on activities like craft projects, sensory bins and outdoor activities all related to the theme.

Cooking:
Prepare simple snacks related to the theme (e.g., gingerbread cookies for a Christmas theme).

Circle Time:
Introduce songs, books and pictures with the theme as a base.

Assessment and Evaluation:
Keep notes on hand as the week progresses and fill out an evaluation sheet of what worked  what didn't and how to improve  it.

Once you have chosen and created your themed lesson plan list of ideas, build a weekly lesson plan.  There are a few different ways to go about this.
One way is to craft a full weekly theme page and the other way is to craft it on a daily basis.
Here are sample templates for each.
